Looking for a cozy, charming restaurant this holiday season? Then Montmartre's "La Part des Anges" is just what you need. Located just off the main square of Place des Abbesses, this tiny French bistro offers some pretty tasty treats. Although the menu isn't too extensive, La Part offers a very affordable meal that includes a starter, main course and one of their delicious desserts for under 30 euros per person. Small interior, lovely servers and attentive owner, this is a perfect stop while Christmas shopping to enjoy a warm, intimate meal with friends.

Montmartre Christmas Market

For any scrooges out there looking to for a change of heart, the Montmartre Christmas market is a must see this winter season. Starting at Place des Abbesses, the market comest to life with warm food, trinkets and holiday cheer. Heading down rue des Abbesses you'll see the street all lit up and decorated, shopkeepers staying open a bit later, the cafés fuller than ever and heated terraces offering warm mulled wine to beat the bitter cold. Walk up to the Sacre Coeur and enjoy a night at Place du Tertre, full of tourists but certainly as charming as ever. Having lived in Montmartre for years and going back for a visit, the Christmas market was the highlight of the week and promises to be a holiday memory worth making.

Marché des Enfants Rouges
A must see in Paris, the marché des Enfants rouges just of rue Bretagne in Paris’ hip 3eme arrondissement will be the culinary highlight of your trip. Specialty food stalls, cheese shops, wine bar and fresh produce in an open air bazar style market hidden off the main road. Apparently the oldest market in Paris and in my opinion one of the best. Take my word for it and go!

Bastille Antiques Fair
Antiques dealers from all over France congregate on Paris' Place de la Bastille, along the Arsénal (port area) for its biannual Brocante antiques fair. Visitors can browse bric-a-brac, hunt for serious atniques and pick up souvenirs among hundreds of stalls.

Paris Photo
Paris Photo is an international fair of 19th-century, modern and contemporary photography, featuring around 100 exhibitors. Held at the Carrousel du Louvre, this high-quality and innovative event brings together the greatest galleries and editors from across the globe.
The fair was founded in 1997 under the leadership of art publisher Rik Gadella. It features 87 galleries from 12 different countries presenting a panorama of photographic practices, from the origins of the medium in the 19th century to its latest developments.

Restaurant of the Month: Le Petit Canard

As the cold winter months are upon us, I found it appropriate to have this month’s restaurant to be focused on delicious and flavorful comfort food. Nothing says comfort like a warm pot of homemade Cassoulet and Le Petit Canard has some of the best in Paris.

Cassoulet is a rich, slow-cooked bean stew or casserole originating in the south of France, containing meat (typically pork sausages, pork, goose, duck and sometimes mutton), pork skin (couennes) and white haricot beans.
The dish is named after its traditional cooking vessel, the cassole, a deep, round, earthenware pot with slanting sides.[1]
Numerous regional variations exist, the best-known being the cassoulet from Castelnaudary, the self-proclaimed "Capital of Cassoulet", Toulouse, and Carcassonne.

Now if Cassoulet doesn’t catch your fancy, le Petit Canard has quite a menu with other duck focused selections. For starters try the assiette of duck saussage, the foie gras or to branch out on flavor, try the escargots or the goats cheese wrapped in filo. A lovely choice of salads and mains (Duck a l’Orange is quite good!) and a modest but reasonably priced wine list. They have a tasting menu for 35 euros per person which includes an apero, starter, main and dessert.

My only complaint had to be the desserts which didn’t quite match the quality of the mains, but certainly the charm of the place helped smooth that over. Attentive staff, intimate ambiance, the Petit Canard is a perfect winter retreat while in search of some comfort food.

It is my humble opinion that fall in Paris is the best time of year to visit. It isn’t just the changing of the season, the crisp leaves below your feet as you pass through the Tuilleries, or the warm moelleux au chocolat that tastes a bit sweeter as the evening turns cool and cozy. There is a calm that spreads over Paris and anchors itself into the daily lives of those who only have a week to live them.

Here are some perfect fall moments this October that aren’t to be missed:

Bastille Market

One of the great things about staying in a private apartment is the opportunity to cook your own food. And to cook, you’ll need to shop. In a world of super markets and super sized food in America, it’s easy to fall into the trap of bringing that mentality with you to Paris. In a city where the language and people can seem foreign on all fronts, food should be something you look forward to exploring. And getting away from the grocery store brand names we have at home is half the battle. The Bastille Market is a fantastic way to see how real people buy real food at a bargain price and make a day of the experience.

Sunday’s in the Bastille Market are lively and exhilerating. You’ll find fresh fish, veg, fruit, flowers...you name it, they’ve got it. Bustling with activity, this is one of the largest in the city and well worth a morning out.

Concerts at the Olympian

For anyone looking to spend an evening as the Parisians do, a concert at the Olympian should be on your to do list. October is a great month to check out some amazing local and large acts, ranging from winners of American Idol’s cousin “ The X Factor France”, to French soul singers and even big names like Tori Amos. The Olympian is a small venue near the old Opera house, with lots of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. For a particularly good evening, check out Millow on Oct 13th and his hit single “You Don’t Know (Me)”.

Montmartre Wine Harvest: Witnessing the Vendanges de Montmartre is a fantastic way to experience the best of Paris in autumn. The village-like Montmartre neighborhood boasts vines that still produce decent wines-- how many major cities can claim that? Each year, the harvest is celebrated with much fanfare, bringing together musicians, performing artists, wine connoisseurs and lovers.

If you’re feeling bold, try their steak Tartare with olive oil and parmesean cheese or their roast duck. With menus starting at 20 euros per person, Le Cap is a great place for family and friends.

September Events in Paris 2011

It’s hard to believe summer is coming to a close and we’re already looking towards a fast approaching fall. For those soon to see Paris travelers, don’t despair. Sept, Oct and Nov can be some of the greatest months of the season, with Parisians back at work and the majority of the tour buses back at the station, life here in Paris just seems a bit more liveable. For those still seeking fun events to fill your days, below you’ll find some of the cities fall favorites:

The Festival d’Automne à Paris (Paris Autumn Festival) is a powerhouse of all artists forms of expression, from contemporary arts, dance, theatre, cinema and music. ‘Festival presents works that stand as references, involving approaches of an experimental nature by, inter alia, commissioning artists to create original works. Every year, from September to December, the Festival features over forty events attracting a total audience of more than 100 000!’ That is hard to resist. Fête des Jardins

On Sept 24th and 25th you’ll find hundreds of free events in some of Paris’ most beautiful gardens. From Parc de la Villette, Jardins du Luxembourg, Jardins des Tuileries to Jardin des Plantes, each garden will host guided tours, concerts and exhibitions. A great way to enjoy the last days of summer.

Jazz à la Villette
From 31 August to 11 September, various places at la Villette pay tribute to jazz. Venues such as La Cité de la musique, le Cabaret Sauvage and la Grande Halle promote the fusion of jazz with pop, electro, free or hip hop.
With each edition of the festival, these mixes and fusions bring about some highly original encounters and creations, effectively raising the buzz factor!
This year once again features an exciting line-up, with Hindi Zahra and Tigran Hamasyan, Archie Shepp, Roy Hargrove "RH Factor", Brad Mehldau, Rodolpe Burger & James Blood Ulmer, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis.

Paris-Deauville Rally
The Paris-Deauville Rally includes a gathering and exhibition of pre-1940s vintage cars, coupés and cabriolets designed before 1960. Enthusiasts also race their precious vehicles from the Place Vendôme in Paris to Deauville in Normandy.
This is a fine time for vintage car enthusiasts to get together; and for the car curious to come along and drink in the incongruous sight.  On the day before the race (Thursday), the cars park on Place Vendôme, turning the "most expensive square in the world" into an ephemeral, outdoor museum of age-old automobiles, many of them rare. Restaurant of the Month: J’Go

With a restaurant name like J’Go, it just seemed a bit too Hollywood for my taste. But taste it has, with its flavors stemming from the South-West of France, J’Go offers a cool, trendy open planned dining experience away from your standard tourist eats. What I like about this place is that it is tasty and affordable, with a simple menu that has delicious salads, meats, cheese, tasty desserts and a nice selection of wine and champagne. Romantic French Gardens Exhibition (1770-1840)
The Romantic French Gardens Exhibition in Paris's Musée de la Vie Romantique, depicts gardens in painting from 1770-1840. From the Lumière period of Jean-Jacques Rousseau to beyond the Revolution, the exhibition shows how gardens became synonymous with art-de-vivre.

Once you've studied the fabulous pieces of art inside (which includes masterworks by French artists of the Romantic Period, Antoine Duclaux and Louis-Léopole Boilly), another type of garden awaits: the Musée de la Vie Romantique's gorgeous hidden rose-garden, which doubles as a tea-room.

Today’s India, a new leading economic player, the largest democracy and the second most populated country in the world, arouses interest and passion but for us is still far away.  “Paris-Delhi-Bombay...” is a new genre of exhibition, an invitation to discover contemporary Indian society as seen by Indian and French visual artists.   Nearly fifty artists have recognised the profound changes in India today and have delivered their perception of the politics, religion, town planning, craftsmanship and even the home. Their work has been built on communications with art historians, sociologists, political pundits, philosophers and anthropologists from the two countries. Most of the French artists paid their first visit to India for this project.
The exhibition resembles a real platform of communication which, in particular brings together Pierre & Gilles, Philippe Ramette, Fabrice Hyber, Subodh Gupta, and Bharti Kher.  Don’t miss this unique Franco-Indian event. Tea Time

As I spend quite a lot of the year in the UK, the concept of tea-time has crept into my mental vocabulary. Here, a cuppa is the highlight of most peoples’ day. I personally have not boarded the tea train but realize that often those traveling in Paris may be in search of some home comforts, whether you’re from Westminster or Wisconsin, a tea break may be in order.

As far as tea rooms go, Angelina seems to have the charm and history one is looking for at the end of a long day of sightseeing. As noted on their website, “Much more than a simple patisserie or tearoom, Angelina is a luxury brand with a prestigious image that symbolises the “French Way of Life”.

The Austrian confectioner Antoine Rumpelmayer established Angelina named after his daughter-in-law, in 1903. For over a century, the Angelina tearoom has established itself as a high point of Parisian gourmet pleasures, Angelina became a must-not-miss venue for the Parisian aristocracy. There, Proust, Coco Chanel and the greatest French fashion designers were to be found…
The decor designed by the famous Belle Epoque architect, Edouard-Jean Niermans, combines elegance, charm and refinement. Angelina is a genuine romantic poem, a quiet and voluptuous venue, between serenity and gourmet pleasure.”

Quite famous for it’s hot chocolate, Angelina’s also has some delicious pastries, quiches and other goodies. Breakfast and Lunch are served and reservations are highly suggested. Although a bit expensive, well worth having a cup and treat while taking in the Belle Epoque atmosphere.

Night at the Museum: May 14th 2011

No, I’m not talking about the Ben Stiller movie. I’m talking about one of the greatest nights across Europe “La Nuit Européenne des Musées”. And Paris is one of the top cities to enjoy such an event.

So what is the Night of European Museums? Paris museums will be open from 6:00 pm-12 midnight for FREE. That’s right, free entrance to all permanent collections. A truly unique way to experience over 193 different exhibits and museum attractions in Paris. Of course you’ll find the major players such as the Lovure, Orsay and even Geroges Pompidou open, but a few special spots to look out for are the Petit Palais, Victor Hugo’s House, Musée d’Art Moderne,....here you’ll find the official link for every museum in every arrondissement. Even though this is mentioned every year, it’s still worth a reminder. The fountains run Saturday and Sundays from 11-12 pm and again from 3:30 pm-5:30 pm.

May 15th-29th: The Saint Germain Jazz Festival is a must see every year with local musicians filling the streets with the sweet sounds of Parisian Jazz.

May 27 th– 29th. If you’re out looking for a street fair with flare, be sure not to miss the famous Rive Gauche Fair on rue du Bac in the 6eme. What’s one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Happy Hunting!

Now this is something I hadn't heard of before. When scouting WhatsonWhen this very groovy article came up, a story on the Monumenta, a must see this May and June while in Paris

"Each year Paris' Grand Palais asks an internationally acclaimed artist to create an artwork exhibition - called Monumenta - to grace its ornate glass nave. It's an aptly named installation, as the 'monumental' works need to fill a 35m-high space.

In 2011, Monumenta is dedicated to Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, deemed one of the most important sculptors of our time and winner of the Turner Prize in 1991. Kapoor's contribution aims to immerse visitors in colour, as they walk inside his huge work - "a single object, a single form, a single colour". He wants his art to "offer a completely new emotional and philosophical experience", and the result promises to be both spectacular and profound.

Spring seems to come quicker in Paris than any other season in any other city. It was just yesterday that we were singing our hearts out to Auld Lang Syne with champagne in hand. But before you can say “what does auld lang syne mean again?”, the tulips push up from the ground in the Tuilleries, the smart looking waiters on the rue des Abbesses cafés dust off the terrace chairs and next thing you know, Spring has sprung.

The second year of equestrian contests bringing back to life a tradition suspended in 1957 in this temple of Parisian culture.

A show jumping contest in the heart of Paris? No, you are not dreaming. This is no longer a privilege reserved for the major hippodromes on the outskirts of the capital.
From 1901 to 1957, the Grand Palais was effectively the stage for equestrian events, speed trials and carrousels where the whole city would flock every spring to see carthorses and Anglo-Norman horses. From 15th to 17th April 2011, the second year of the Saut Hermès will revive this fervour under the glass roof of this famous monument.
On the programme, equestrian shows created especially for the event and seven horse-jumping trials in which the world’s 35 best riders compete, including Eric Lamaze, Simon Delestre, Kevin Staut, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Marcus Ehning. For the first time this year, the 15 best young European riders are also invited to take part in two new trials.

Food design – delicate adventures

The Lieu du Design gives carte blanche to Marc Brétillot, French master of culinary design, for an exhibition and a series of performances.

Brétillot has imagined a triple circuit, inspired by the ten years he has spent at the Ecole Supérieure d’Art et de Design (Ensad) in Reims where he leads a research workshop in his very unusual discipline. You can see the work of six young designers following in the steps of their prestigious elder. And the work of a group of students developed in conjunction with major food processing industry groups (Quick, La Grande Epicerie...).
You can also attend five evening culinary performances presented by Ensad graduates alongside students from the Ecole Supérieure de Cuisine Française Grégoire Ferrandi where Brétillot also teaches. A conference will be held before each performance.Those wanting to find out more about culinary design can delve into the totem library, a meeting place with a sizeable library (monographs, reference books, books on food, human sciences...). Designer Magali Wehrung will also hold two culinary workshops for children.

Who says you need to go to Venice to see the famous Murano Glass? Starting on 2nd March 2011, the Centre Pompidou is presenting his first retrospective, presented as a chain of a dozen small exhibitions, summaries of each creative period. A unique opportunity to discover his first sculptures made of yellow sulphur powder or wax, his installations made using the phosphorous from matches, his paintings of hidden eroticism, his famous giant necklaces in Murano glass and his latest monumental works of art. A journey through a strange and incredibly intense universe, navigating between magic and crudeness.

Kubrick Fans!

The exhibition dedicated to Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999), one of the 20th century's greatest filmmakers, invites you to discover the fascinating and intimate universe of the maker of Lolita, 2001: a Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket or even Eyes Wide Shut.  Get exclusive access to documents on the producer’s preparatory work: scenarios, pilot studies, letters, research preparatory archives, photographs, costumes and accessories, as well as detailed documentation on the incomplete projects which now have cult status such as: "Napoleon".
From his beginnings as a photographer for the American magazine "Look" in the 1940s to the most recent photographs, enter the universe of the master who, at a very young age, already possessed a keen sense of visual composition.  Finally, through interactive digital installations, go behind the set and discover the technical innovations and special effects perfected by Kubrick.

I’m currently planning a 3 week honeymoon for clients in France, Switzerland and Italy. One evening after a long hard day of travel planning, I sat down to a glass of wine and some cheese. As you probably have noticed, the French don’t often each cheese before a meal like we do in the states. The very thought of a block of cheddar on a tooth-pick would send the locals screaming from their frommageries! In France, cheese is served after the meal and before dessert. In my opinion, there is no right or wrong time to eat cheese, unless of course, you are lactose intolerant and then this blog has certainly killed your appetite.

In my Switzerland & France research, I started thinking about their cheese and the history of fondue and the mysterious Raclette, a distinctive dish from the Swiss Alps dating back hundreds of years. That’s some old cheese. Raclette is a popular Swiss cow’s milk cheese but also the name of a dish created by melting cheese and serving it with a selection of other foods (potatoes, meats, etc). From the Southwestern part of Switzerland near the Matterhorn, the raclette then spread out (pun intended) to parts of France, Germany, Austria and yes, even the US. So that’s where we got Mac ‘n Cheese from.

History
The dish featuring Raclette cheese dates back more than 700 years, when it was called Bratchäs, Swiss-German for "roasted cheese." Raclette was mentioned in writings as early as 1291. The semi-hard cheese was easy to transport, and it was eaten by shepherds and farmers, who would place a block of cheese by a hearth or a campfire. There, it would become soft, and the melted cheese would be served with potatoes, onions and pickles.  

Traditional Fare
The name "Raclette" is derived from the French word racler, which means "to scrape." Though it is similar to fondue--in which pieces of bread and other foods are dipped into a melted cheese mixture--Raclette is distinctive because the melted cheese is scraped from a block of cheese, then placed over or near vegetables and bread on a plate. A special Raclette knife may be used for this purpose.

La Grange: Best Fondue in Paris! Address: 72 rue Mouffetard Tél: 01 43 36 19 74. People come here only for the cheese fondue (Savoyard is the best). I highly suggest asking for a plate of “charcuterie” (sliced meats) a side of pickles & boiled potatoes. The white table wine is not bad or if you prefer red, a bottle is best. Trust me on this!

The Magic of Paris

I recently stumbled upon an online thread for parents taking their kids to Paris looking for places to visit that aren’t the usual tourist attractions. The Museum of Magic was mentioned as a fun, and very French thing to do. A small museum located in the Marais the Magic Museum offers a fun, informal experience. C'est magique!

It doesn't get any better than the holiday season in Paris. The decorations, the lights, the festivities and of course, the views are some of the best in the world. Last year I was in London the first part of December and when my birthday came around I found myself hopping on the Eurostar back to Paris, spending the entire month in the city of light. It was one of my favorite holidays of all time.

Although I won't be in Paris this season, for those lucky travelers out there staying with PVA, you're guaranteed a fun and festive holiday. Below you'll find a few ideas for events in town this December:

Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, op. 14: Dec 7th at 7pm
The Musée d'Orsay, set in a former 19th-century train station, makes a spectacular backdrop for a music concert. Listen to Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, op14 amid sculptures and paintings at this one-off performance given by Radio France's Philharmonic Orchestra. As with any event in Paris, please check with the organizers that the event is happening before making travel arrangements. Dec 7th at 7pm, Cost 12 euro pp entrance.

Great Wines Fair: Dec 10th & 11th
The Great Wines Fair (Le Grand Tasting) at the Carrousel du Louvre introduces some 20,000 visitors to the world's finest wines with a lively programme of tastings and conferences. Over 100 châteaux are represented, both established names and worthy newcomers. Dec 10th & 11th, from 10:30am-7:30 pm. 1-day pass €20; 2-day pass €25. For more details contact their website.

Paris Christmas Markets: Every Day
Wrap up warm and visit Paris' Christmas Markets at the Boulevard Saint Germain and Place Saint-Sulpice. Sip a vin chaud as you browse for stocking fillers. Little ones can meet the man himself, Père Noël, and reveal their wish lists. Location: Blvd Saint Germain, By Métro: to Saint-Germain or Mabillon.

Designer Christmas Trees Display
The InterContinental hosts its annual Designer Christmas Trees Display within the hotel's winter garden. Each of the sapins is an original from students of Paris' fashion colleges, echoing December's private auction of A-list designs (by Gucci and Gaultier). Swan Lake at the Opera Bastille
Tchaikovsky's first and most beautiful ballet echoes with extraordinary gentleness and melancholy in the Opera Bastille's production of Swan Lake (with original choreography by Rudolf Nureyev). If you're in Paris over the festive season, make sure you book in advance.

For some reason the restaurants near the Eiffel Tower seem a bit daunting for any traveler- which one, how much, will I get good service, good food? La Billebaude is a perfect little French bistrot offering delicious traditional food. From wild boar stew to rabbit or fish to roast pheasant. This is exactly what you’ll need this holiday season after waiting in line to go up the tower!

At a reasonable price, the set 3-course menu is around 30 euro plus wine. Be sure to indulge in some of their homemade desserts too!

Restaurant of the month: Chez Toinette

For PVA guests either staying in Montmartre or there to explore during their trip, you’ll see there’s a wide assortment of restaurants nearby. Chez Toinette is a local favourite and now becoming quite popular with travellers as well. Located in the heart of the 18eme near Metro Abbesses, Chez Toinette boasts a short but sweet menu of traditional bistro cuisine such as duck, steack, foie gras, escargot and a small selection of desserts. Choose from the a la carte selection or the reasonable fixed menu prices. Quite a few meat dishes and desserts, not ideal for vegetarians though. Attentive service and a charming atmosphere, perfect for an evening out before heading up to see the city lights from the steps of the Sacre Coeur.

Plan on making an evening at the "Seven Lizards" (where did it get that name?). The night begins on the main level, which is a kind of tearoom/bar/restaurant. You can begin with a classic French onion soup and follow with such Provençal fare as lasagna niçoise with ratatouille. Main dishes begin at 14€ ($20). Later you can head downstairs for a jazz concert in the stone-built cellar. Many members of the expat jazz community gather here to listen to up-and-coming players. The restaurant is open daily from noon to midnight, and the cellar sees action daily 9pm to 2am (Text generously borrowed from Frommers).

My favorite summer restaurant of the year, Comptoir des Archives offers fantastic food at a great price. Located just 5 min from the "heart" of the Marais, Comptoir des Archives welcomes locals and travelers alike at all hours of the day. Perfect for lunch (try the samon tartare with a house rosé) or for dinner (the duck confit with potatoes is the best in the neighborhood along with a bordeaux and the delicious moelleux au chocolat for dessert). Best seat in the house is certainly on the terrace where you can people watch, chat and flirt with the waiters all day long. Reasonable prices, great food, fast service.

People always wonder what Paris in August is like. In my opinion, it is one of the best months of the year. The streets seem quieter and less hectic The locals that are left are usually the down to earth type that enjoy long leisurely lunches because if they do have to work, quite frankly, there isn’t much to do with everyone else gone. Sure, some places are closed, but those that are open always have a table. And the events or concerts going on certainly aren’t for the benefit of the lingering tourists, but rather the mayors well executed attempt to please the people that live here.

Pianissimo Jazz Festival
Paris' summer American Jazz Festival continues until the end of August with its younger sibling, the Pianissimo Jazz Festival. Both are held at the legendary Sunset/Sunside club, where world-class jazz-men from across the globe (especially America) jam on tiny stages.
Headlining again in 2010 is New Yorker and jazz percussionist, Leon Parker (23-26 August).

Moonlit Cinema in Paris
Every summer, Parisian quartiers put on free films outdoors during the Cinéma au clair de lune, or Moonlit Cinema festival. Catch screenings everywhere from the Butte de Montmartre in the north to the Parc de Choisy in the south.
Each outdoor venue has the capacity for an audience of 300-500 people. Full details of the 2010 programme are posted on the Forum des Images website as soon as they are announced.

Open Air Concerts at Bercy Village
Every Tuesday and Thursday during summer the cobbled café terraces of Bercy Village pulsate to the sound of free open-air concerts. Each soirée brings a different sound, from Cuban folk and New Orleans jazz to bossanova and Balkan music.
The concerts, organised in partnership with the World Music association and the Satellit Café (Paris's flagship world music bar), aim to promote both well-known and emerging groups from across the globe.   After the show, take your pick of the village's surrounding restaurants, or catch a film at the UGC multi-screen cinema at the end of the street.

Festival Rock en Seine
The Festival Rock en Seine is held in the Saint Cloud park just outside Paris. The three-day event offers a consistently excellent line-up and its chilled-out atmosphere makes it a definite highlight of the city's musical calendar.
The 2010 line-up includes Massive Attack, Cypress Hill, Arcade Fire, Roxy Music, Foals, The Kooks, Eels and 2 Many Djs.

CiaoChase Paris: Better than Ever!

A few years ago, I had PVA clients get in touch with me about putting together a different sort of walking tour. They wanted something that bordered on a scavenger hunt, or something along the lines of "The Amazing Race". Always up for a challenge I told them let me work my magic and put something together. The CiaoChase Paris was born.

Now three years later, with the success of CiaoChase Roma, the Paris version has had a facelift to make it more interesting and fun, the riddles more complex and now hard to find items at each destination. Wine & Dine at Da Rosa

Having been recommended by a good friend and colleague (who also does the food & wine tours for PVA!) Last night I spent the evening at Da Rosa in the heart of St Germain. This tiny little restaurant and wine bar offers a charming location with an exceptional array of delicious meats, cheeses and wines. The menu also has luxury choices of caviar, foie gras, champagne and other such "splurges" best enjoyed while on vacation.

We opted for the 100% Jambon "Ibérico", thinly sliced to perfection (tapas size order) paired with a chilled rosé on the terrace. Positively delicious. For anyone looking for a nice place for a late lunch or early apero, this is it. Located just off the famous market street of rue due Buci, you can find Da Rosa on 62 rue de Seine in the 6th arrondissement.

Movies in the Parc: July 17th-Aug 22nd 2010

Various places show movies in the park in the evenings. I love going to Place des Vosges with some wine and takeout to enjoy a film and a cool night out. Jazz at Parc Floral

Jazz lovers look out! Parc Floral boasts a fantastic program of the world’s best jazz artists. In the heart of Bois de Vincennes, this annual celebration is a great excuse to grab a picnic, sprawl out on the grass and enjoy the music. The festival has already started and goes through August 1st, so don’t miss out! Tickets start at around 5€ pp.

Summer Arts Festival: 15 Jul 2010 - 09 Aug 2010

For four weeks each summer, the streets of Paris are transformed into a huge open-air performing arts space for the Summer Arts Festival (Quartier d'Eté). The event embraces all forms of artistic expression with performances of opera, jazz, theatre, classical music, circus, film and dance in a packed summer programme. Venues range from cinemas in the bohemian Latin Quarter to the elegance of the Jardin des Tuileries. Many Parisians vacate the capital during the heat of the summer months, leaving more space for visitors to enjoy the spectacle.

The Magic of St-Sulpice

Often when people come to Paris, they only have time for the big guys: Notre-Dame, the Tour Eiffel, the Louvre. But there are so many gems in Paris that really add to the culture and authenticity of the city. A personal favorite has to be St-Sulpice.

Before the success of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code this was a relatively unknown church by tourists. But before Dan Brown ever mentioned St-Sulpice, there is some magic to be found here.

“Known as the "Cathedral of the Rive Gauche," Saint-Sulpice is one of the largest churches in Paris. The facade is austere for a Baroque edifice and has a slightly lopsided appearance, as the south tower was never finished (the north tower rises to 73m; the south to 68m). Its Italianate design with open colonades looks like a cut-out from the Roman Colosseum.” (Sacred Places)

The interior is an intimate look at some of Delacroix most impressive Frescos and the Chapelle des Anges (Chapel of the Angels) and one of the world’s biggest church organs which is still in use today. But without a doubt the Chapel of the Virgin will take your breath away. The best part about this church? Depending on the time of day, you can find yourself completely alone here with only your thoughts. That sure beats the line at Notre-Dame, doesn’t it?

Unheard Of!....Pocket Film Festival

When I read about this I thought it was a joke. But these filmmakers aren’t laughing! aris' Pompidou Centre welcomes back the annual Pocket Film Festival. A toast to the exciting possibilities that exist in making movies on your mobile, the festival showcases all manner of mini dramas, absurd or realist, comic or tragic.
A selection of the best clips is available for viewing on the festival's website in the run-up to the festival; vote for your favorite in the competition and download them to your mobile. Very cool stuff.

Midsummer Fireworks & Fête de la Musique

Why wait until New Years to see one of the best fire displays in town? Every year on 24 June fireworks are fired from the tip of the Ile Saint-Louis as hundreds watch from the Quai Saint-Bernard. The Midsummer Fireworks display celebrates the shortest night of the year. And the best part? It’s free! So take a bottle of wine, your friends or family and enjoy!

Also, you can't miss out on my favorite event in all of France, La Fête de la Musique on June 21st. Yves Saint-Laurent Retrospective 
The Petit Palais has opened the first large-scale retrospective of French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent's work. Curated in close cooperation with Pierre Bergé, the designer's longtime partner in both life and business, the exhibit highlights 300 key creations from YSL, who died in 2008 at the age of 71.

The Shakespeare & Company Literary Festival

Headlining writers this year include acclaimed British novelist Jeannette Winterson (Oranges are Not the Only Fruit, The Passion) and American writer Emma Larkin (Finding George Orwell in Burma).

Irving Penn: Small Trades 
One of the 20th century's most acclaimed fashion photographers, American-born Irving Penn was also profoundly interested in documenting the daily lives of people working in various trades. Many PVA clients come to Paris wanting to taste some good French wine but without taking a wine tasting course in the city (not nearly as fun as going to the vineyards in Bourgogne or Bordeaux!)

So I’ve decided in addition to recommending favorite restaurants in Paris, I’ll also have some wine bar recommendations for those thirsty for French wine knowledge. It’s all a learning process for all of us, so enjoy!

This month I’d like to suggest Aux Doux Raisins located in the 5eme arrondissement of Paris. Right in the heart of the charming rue Mouffetard “experience” and just behind the Pantheon this wine bar is a perfect stop before the nights festivities if staying in the Latin Quarter.

The bar boasts a wonderful selection of all regions of France including Champagne and even some very popular BIO (pronounced bee-oh) organic wines.

With a rustic atmposhere, Aux Doux Raisins also offers fantastic “formules” from 10€ and up which include a selection of charcuterie, cheese, and wine. Some even have dessert included.

The French are very proud of their food, cheese and most certainly their wine. But wine is to be shared, so don’t be shy in going into any wine bar and trying a few. Before buying a large glass or even a bottle, ask the barman if you can “Gouter” or taste. Ask their opinion- you’ll surely get an earful if they have a favorite they’d like to talk about. It’s all part of the experience, so enjoy!

Crime & Punishment (from Goya to Picasso)

This exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay is one not to miss! The “Crime and Punishment, from Goya to Picasso” exhibition examines the aesthetic of violence and the representation of violent crime and the death penalty in the visual arts through a selection of striking works by major artists.   The death penalty, crime and punishment and Man’s desire to defy an all-powerful God and the supremacy of the King to mete out his own justice – these are all strong themes that have inspired generations of painters. Goya, Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne and Degas among others were fascinated by images of crime and capital punishment.   The works on display are pictorial representations of the guillotine, crimes of passion, male and female criminals, prison conditions and the last days of condemned prisoners.   The last few works on display depict the use of the criminal theme in the visual arts.

Edvard Munch or The Anti-Scream

Lisette Model 
The Galeries Nationale du Jeu de Paume is running a unique retrospective on the work of Austrian-American photographer Lisette Model, one of the leading figures in the street and documentary photography movements that blossomed in New York during the 1940s. Best Crêpes in Paris

One of my favorite things to eat in Paris both at home and out and about are crêpes. They first originated in Brittany but are now enjoyed world-wide in many different languages and for many different holidays. We recently just celebrated Shrove Tuesday here in the UK to kick off Lent.

Crêpes are usually made in two ways: sweet crêpes (crêpes sucrées) made with wheat flour and slightly sweetened; and savoury galettes (crêpes salées) made with buckwheat flour and unsweetened. The name "galette" came from the word "galet", French for pebble, since the first gallettes were made on a large pebble heated in a fire. Batter made from buckwheat flour is gluten-free, which makes it possible for people who have a gluten allergy or intolerance to eat this type of crêpe. They can be eaten as street food from local stands or at sit down restaurants for a more “formal” environment. My personal advice for those eating at a stand: Always go somewhere where they make the crêpe directly in front of you-no pre-made re-heated pancakes! You’ll want them fresh off the griddle. Personal favorites are ham/cheese/egg or for a dessert crêpe, although I can’t resist the nutella banana option! Whatever your style is, there will be a crêpes for you somewhere.

David Lebovitz (famous food critique) says “for street crêpes, in the area around the gare Montparnasse in Paris, there's a plethora of crêperies since the trains departing and arriving from that station go to Brittany and the immigrants set up shop there once upon a time. In an area crowded with crêperies, the one that stands out is Josselin. It's noisy, bustling, and lots of fun.”

Restaurant of the Month: Cocotte Jolie

I’m always looking for new places that still have my favorite dishes. I recently came across a lovely little restaurant in the 7th called Cocotte Jolie. What a delight for the senses! Colorfully decorated with small quircky touches everywhere you look, the owners have created a boutique style bistro with great attention to detail. The menu has a great selection of standard French dishes and beautifully presented cheese and charcuterie plates. I opted for some red wine (chosen by the owner) and a mixed plate of French cheeses, homemade confit (preserves), incredible meats and salamis. I can safetly say the best plate of nibbles I’ve ever had and quite filling!

With a tiny downstairs and full bar, the Cocotte Jolie also has a huge upstairs for larger groups. Dinner reservations are recommended. This is a perfect place for a local flavor that offers great food, wine, ambiance and attention to boot!

Year of the Tiger: Chinese New Year in Paris

After ringing in the New Year in Paris, many of us are in detox mode and saving up for the next big bash. But for anyone who missed the festivities this year, or find themselves looking for a new experience in Paris, why not ring in the New Year Chinese Style?

With a huge Chinese population living in Paris, this year’s celebration will be one to remember. 2010 is the Year of the Tiger with themes associated with the virtues of enthusiasm, honesty, passion, warmth and my personal favorite, recklessness.

Paris actually has two Chinatowns: One where many Vietnamese - specifically ethnic Chinese refugees from Vietnam - have settled in the Quartier chinois in the 13eme arrondissement of Paris, and the other in Belleville in the northeast of Paris. So you have your pick of where to ring in the New Year in style! One major point of attraction is the Tang Frères and Paristore supermarkets, selling Asian products, located close to each other. Parisian Chinatown is based in a real Asian community, located in marginal and poor areas, formed through successive waves of migration (the first of them during the 1910s). There is also a large number of Far East restaurants, especially on Rue de Belleville and on Rue Civiale.

It's scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm and starts at Hôtel de Ville (Paris City Hall); Metro Hotel de Ville or Rambuteau. The celebration on the following Sunday begin at 1:30 pm and starts at or around 44, Avenue Ivry in the 13th arrondissement (metro Tolbiac).
Parade Highlights: Chinese New Year parades in Paris are famed for their elaborate decorations (red lanterns, grinning dragons, bright orange fish) and for its noisy cheer, which usually includes firecrackers.

Valentine’s Day Paris: 2010

Every year, people contact me for ideas to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Paris. To be honest, you can’t really go wrong in the most romantic city in the world. You’ve got your choice of standard tourist attractions and only a handful are really worth the price you pay for Valentine’s Day. I still love the Seine Dinner Cruise- but would certainly opt out of the Eiffel Tower Dinner. You’ve got the favorite famous restaurants like the Jules Verne or La Tour d’Argent, but really, there are so many good bistros in this city you don’t need to spend your entire vacation fund for a meal.

If it were up to me, I’d start my evening at a wine bar, either Le Verre Volé ("the stolen glass”) located on 67 rue de Lancry in the 10th arrondissement where you can order wine by the glass between 7pm and 8pm and then head over to one of the many cosy restaurants along Canal St Martin (my favorite is La Marine 55 Quai de Valmy, Paris –Phone: 01 42 39 69 81). Then wander back through the city and be sure to watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle from Pont Neuf or any of the southern bridges with a bottle of champagne. Romantic and affordable, what more can you ask for?

Les Sapins de Noël des Créateurs

Big hitters from Paris' fashion world create their own Christmas trees for Les Sapins de Noël des Créateurs. The results are displayed to the public, this year at the Cité de l'Architecture, then auctioned for charity.
A-list designers include Jean-Paul Gaultier, Gucci, Hermès and Paul Smith. The sapin de Noël (Christmas tree) is often anything but a real tree - past entries have ranged from haute couture dresses inspired by the shape of firs to high heels decked out in baubles and tinsel.  All proceeds from the annual auction go to Paris' Sol en Si (Solidarité en SIDA) charity, dedicated to helping those youngsters affected by AIDS.

Platée thinks everybody who approaches her pond falls in love with her. She fails to realise that Jupiter (François Lis) has only visited her (first as a donkey, then as an owl and, finally as a thunderbolt) to try to cure his wife, Juno (Doris Lamprecht) of her constant jealousy. Christmas Trees in Paris

Every year Paris erects thousands of Christmas trees along its boulevards, throughout its quartiers and dotted around its official buildings. The Ministry of Parks is behind the initiative, which transforms the capital into a magical festive playground.
Key points of the city are densely populated - some 270 fir trees are placed at the roundabout of the Champs-Elysées and 180 at the Place de la Bastille. But it isn't just the showiest parts of the city that turn green in winter. Less wealthy areas, such as Montmartre, also get their fair share of trees. The City of Paris donates trees to decorate the barges on the Seine where a Secours Catholique (Charity Celebration) welcomes the New Year for the underprivileged.  If you're worrying about forests being ripped up to fuel the Christmas needs of the French capital, fear not - the fir trees are purpose-grown in French nurseries in the Jura. The practice is so firmly rooted in the French psyche that it is hard to imagine Paris at Christmas without its festive fir trees - the tradition has been going strong since the 19th century.

Celebrants can take in the scents and sounds of a French Christmas Mass at the Eglise de la Madeleine in Paris. The church holds a traditional service on Christmas Eve and several on Christmas Day itself.

A Taste of Parisian Life

I often get emails from people interested in “living like a Parisian”. As a tourist, this is something many people would actually like to do during their stay, especially those who have made the effort of renting an apartment. Rue Montorgueil
For a night out on the town without bumping into too many tourists, start your evening out on Rue Montorgueil, located just behind les Halles. This fun neighborhood attracts all types of locals. Starting at the stunning St Eustache Cathedral (look for the enormous stone head in the square just in front!). Passage des Panoramas
An exceptional look at the remaining Napoleonian shopping arcades of Paris. These covered “passages” and ‘galleries” were created for those who wanted to window shop ad stroll around in a clean, well-lit place without the noise and filth from the main street and horses passing by. The Passage des Panoramas was built in 1799 and it was probably the very first covered arcade in Paris. Enter at the Vivienne Entrance located just behind Palais Royal.

Rue de Buci
For a fun, quick market tour that won’t take up your entire day, walk across the river to Place St Michel. If you’re facing the statue, go right and take the small side street on the right called Rue St Andre des Arts. A major tourist street, but once you get to the Buci Square, you’ll have quite a little selection of local market items, food, cheese, wine, great bistros, wine shop, flower shop. This would be if you’re looking for something to sort of stroll through, but not a major market investment.

A New Take on an Old Chateau

Often travelers coming to Paris for repeat visit find themselves in a bit of a fix to see something new the second time around. They’ve seen Versailles, maybe the Loire Valley, maybe even day trip to Fontainebleu or Vaux le Vicomte. But if you haven’t had your fix of stunning French chateaux, then you’re in luck. The gorgeous Chateau de Chantilly is just 25 from Paris and well worth the trip. Below you’ll find some information on the chateau, it’s history, and what to expect when you arrive:

The Chateau de Chantilly is a beautiful castle situated at the heart of a vast domain, which covers an area of approximately 7,800 hectares and is located in one of the largest forests near Paris and has a park of around 155 hectares in size.  The Chateau de Chantilly and the whole estate has been built up by the different owners since the Middle Ages from the late 1300's to virtually the end of the 1800's and was always passed on by inheritance to different branches of the same family and was never sold. Unfortunately when the Duc d'Aumale inherited Chantilly he had no heirs to pass it on to as he had already lost his sons, so in his will it was left to the Institut de France.

You will no doubt find that the History of Chantilly castle is rather fascinating, but what you probably didn't realize, is that this chateau is also home to one of the finest museums of historical paintings in France and is second only to The Louvre in Paris. In fact, it is the only museum in France not including The Louvre that has 3 Raphael paintings.   There are around 1,000 paintings, 2,500 drawings and 2,500 engravings, that are on display at this magnificent castle which is situated under an hour away from Paris.

But the Chateau Chantilly and the Conde Museum also has a library that is full or rare books and precious manuscripts and there are around 30,000 books and about 1,500 manuscripts held here.     The French garden with its magnificent fountains and ponds was designed by Andre Le Notre, who also designed the gardens at the Chateau de Versailles and this is just one of the areas in the grounds that is pleasant to walk around and admire!  

The Chateau's chapel is dedicated to Saint Louis, where you will be able to see a statue that dominates the exterior façade and was constructed in 1882 more or less on the same spot where the old chapel stood before the French Revolution.   You can also visit the Petits Appartements which were the private rooms of the Duc d'Aumale and these are accessed via the Escalier d'Honneur or Staircase of Honour and are situated on the ground floor of the Petit Chateau that look out over the large balcony which stands above the moat.   There is also a very important collection of photographs that date from the second half of the 19th century and it reflects the different steps in the history of photography.The Chateau de Chantilly also has a very large park including the French-style garden with fountains and ponds that was designed by Andre Le Nôtre.

August is a strange time of year to be in the City of Lights. It seems all the locals have traded their favorite city for sandy beaches and Mediterranean cuisine down in the South. But that doesn’t mean the tourists are left without anything to do. In fact, August just might be the perfect time to come. You won’t have to fight for a seat on your favorite café terrace, the metros are empty, the lines are shorter and there are a few restaurants still happy to have you dine with them (although I wouldn’t count on service with a smile for those unlucky waiters stuck in Paris).

Below you’ll find a few activities in August worth looking into:

Arenes de Montmartre

Restaurant of the Month: Le Caveau de l'Isle

Last month I had the pleasure of eating at Le Caveau de l'Isle, a small traditional French bistro on the Ile St Louis in central Paris. Le Caveau oozes charm, ambiance and what travelers think all Paris restaurants should be like. And it certainly measured up. The upstairs dining area is small but intimate, candles on each table but enough room between yourself and your neighbors so you don't feel as if you're sharing your creme brulée with them.

I opted for the menu of starter, main dish and dessert for 25 euro. This included a delicious house foie gras, followed by a perfectly cooked Cote d'Agneau with Dauphinoise potatoes and finishing with a scrumptious Tarte Tatin with creme fraîche for dessert. We opted for a moderately priced Bordeaux which complimented the meal.

Although I can't say all the waiters were overly friendly (this is Paris after all). If they offer you a seat downstairs, insist on eating upstairs as the ambiance is better. This is a great restaurant where you can come and enjoy one of those famous 3-hour French meals at your leisure.

Best of the Both Borders: Languedoc-Roussillon

Last week I had the opportunity to visit one of the most interesting parts of France known as the Languedoc-Roussillon. This region, although in the South of France, is a far cry from the Provence or the Cote d’Azur vacation spots many tourists flock to. The Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the most fascinating areas of Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the east and the Pyrenees Mountains to the south.

So what makes this part of the country so special? For me, it was the combination of the best of both borders of France & Spain and the heavy Catalan influence you find in cities such as Perpignan. I was able to go out for Tapas & Sangria before heading to a French restaurant for typical Southern France cuisine. Another plus for me was the fact that I didn’t hear any English spoken- almost everything was in French, with street signs and menus in French & Catalan. You have beautiful beaches stretching from Montpellier down to the border and you can be in Spain within 40 minutes. Oh yeah, and the weather is superb over 300 days per year. What's not to like?

For wine connoisseurs, it is interesting to know that the Languedoc-Roussillon is the world’s largest wine-producing region. Languedoc’s wine production exceeds that of Bordeaux, of Australia, and that of South Africa and Chile combined. Languedoc-Roussillon’s wine represents a third of the volume of all French output (in 2006, the region produced 15,750,000 hectolitres of wine, which accounted for 34 per cent of total French output). I had the opportunity to spend the day out with a local organic wine producer in St Chinian. Thanks to Phillippe, my idea of organic wine has been changed forever! He took us out to his vineyards to show us the vines, soil and newly formed grapes soon ready for harvest come September (end of August or his famous white wines). Of course the day out in the wine county wouldn’t be complete without a private tasting in his own cave with a selection of organic white, rosé and reds from his vineyard.

A visit to the Languedoc wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the famous town of Carcassonne known for its stunning medieval city and delicious regional specialty, Cassoulet.

I also took a day out to travel 20 minutes from Perpignan by train to the beach town of Collioure, where Henri Matisse once said In France there is no sky as blue as the one in Collioure...” and he was right. The day spent sunning on the beach, eating mules et frites with a chilled glass of crisp white, and walking along the shore couldn’t have been better. The train is easily accessible by public transport.

Often many people that travel to France start their journey in Paris. There are a hundred reasons to keep coming back, and now that I’ve discovered the Languedoc, I now have another one to add to the list. Room for Rosé: Summer Nights in Paris

A summer in Paris means many different things to many different travelers. For some, it means crowds, lines, rude waiters and sunburned tourists. For those who understand that the French joie de vivre is so much more than then number of sites you can see in one day, a Summer in Paris might be the best time of your life.

There is a buzz in the air, whether it be the heat or the potent cheese, one can’t resist noticing that something is different here. No longer are locals so in a rush to get somewhere. The food seems to taste better (if that is even possible) and for people like myself, the search for a tall cool one is just part of the day, starting from about lunch onwards.

This summer, I’m casting aside my usual chilled Côte de Rhone or Chablis and going for an old Parisian classique: La Rosé. I’ve been told that more than one in five bottles of wine sold in France is a rosé, and a hot summer ensures the amount of rosé drunk is more than half of all bottles consumed all year.

The perfect aperitif on a summer night in France starts with either a kir or a glass of rosé. For those on the lookout, try a bottle from the South, either the Languedoc Roussillon region or Provence. To stay closer to home you may opt for a bottle from Anjou in the Loire – France's other main rosé area. Oddly enough, one of the best bottles of rosé I have ever tried was from Gevrey Chambertin.

Can’t wait until you get to France? Here are a few classique rosés suggested by wine guide Stacy Slinkard that you can find at home:

1. Jaboulet Côtes du Rhône Parallèle 45 Rosé 2005 (FR) $ 11
The Jaboulet Côtes du Rhône Parallèle 45 Rosé 2005 is a classic French Rosé from the Rhône region. This is a vibrant Rosé with dominating flavors of raspberries and strawberries, there is a kick of spice on the finish. Three grape varietals are blended to make this Rosé - Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. A great complement to grilled fish or roasted veggies.

2. Red Bicyclette French Rosé 2005 (France) $10-12
Talk about a wine made for relaxed summer fun and spontaneous barbecues! The El Coto de Rioja Rosado has an intense pink color and offers a smooth palate feel, with the dominant flavors of cherry and raspberry. This is a fresh and lively wine with a semi-dry finish. A terrific choice for grilled fare, pasta salads, fish and summer salads.

4. V. Sattui's 2005 Gamay Rouge (California) $17
V. Sattui's Gamay Rouge is a phenomenal Rosé that is sure to be a palate pleaser! Extended contact with the grape skins produces a rich red rose color. The flavor profile provides the palate with stunning strawberry and a touch of cherry. A top pick wine to sip by the pool or pair with virtually any of summer's bounty!

5. Folonari Pink Pinot Grigio 2005 (Italy) $8
Yes, Pinot Grigio is a white grape, so how they heck is it presented as a Rosé? Italy's Pinot Grigio grape has dark skin and the fermenting juice is colored by contact with this dark grape skin, producing a lovely, pink color. Fresh floral and fruit aromas are set to greet you upon first impression, followed by a slightly sweet citrus flavor. This is a perfect wine for Asian fare and seafood.

6. V. Sattui 2005 Rosato (CA) $15
This is a hotshot dry Rosé from V. Sattui, that is sure to knock your socks off with its vibrant fresh berry flavors from start to finish. A top pick Rosé for bridal showers, brunches or appetizers.

Below you'll find some fantastic events held in Paris this June 2009 courtesy of About.Com's travel section. My personal favorite is always La Fête de la Musique held on June 21st where you can see bands from all over the city, literally spread out on each street corner performing live for your enjoyment. Just pick an arrondissement (Montmartre, St Germain, the Marais, Canal St Martin & the Bastille are good fun) and wander around from bar to bar listening to the music of all genres. It's a great (free) night out in Paris!

Foire Saint-Germain (Street Fair)

La Foire Saint Germain is a street fair that has been held in Paris since the medieval period. The streets of the St Germain des Prés district are abuzz with concerts, theater performances, antique fairs, and even poetry workshops. A convivial event not to be missed.

LGBT Pride (Paris Gay Pride)

The LGBT Pride Parade (Paris Gay Pride) takes the streets of the city of light by storm this June 27th. One of the year's most popular festivals for locals and visitors of all stripes, this year's festival kicks off at the Montparasse-Bienvenue metro station at 2:00 pm, winding through the city to Bastille on the right bank.

Through June 7th: The French Open at Roland Garros-- Tennis fans should not miss one of France's most exciting and important tournaments. Tennis greats like Steffi Graf made their debuts at Roland Garros, and the French Open continues to host some of the world's unforgettable matches.

Fête de la Musique (Free Citywide Music Festival): Every June 21st, free musical performances of all genres are on across the city, making for one of the year's liveliest and most convivial events.

Burgundy Food & Wine Tours

This month, I’ve been getting a lot of requests from hungry clients who are looking for a cooking class in Paris. But for those of you wanting a unique day out of the big city, I have a new favorite day trip that combines the countryside, food and wine of one of the most beautiful regions in France: Bourgogne.

Beaune is an easy train ride from Paris and in less than 2 hours you’ll find yourself in a beautiful French town where the wine is flowing and the food is aplenty. On Saturdays in Beaune, you’ll find one of the best open-air markets I’ve seen in Northern France. Fresh produce, meats, cheeses and regional delicacies fill the square in front of the famous Hotel Dieu along with a chance to taste some of the best Pinot Noirs in the world.

But why stop there? For those food and wine lovers, there’s a great opportunity to take a hands on cooking class either at a local chefs home in central Beaune or out in the countryside overlooking the Burgundy vineyards. Still interested? In the afternoon, our guide will take you through the back route of the famous Bourgogne vineyards, driving up to Hautes Cotes de Nuits for a cheese tasting with an artisan cheese maker. She has over 100 goats and lives in a 300-year old farmhouse where we taste the cheese with some wine after the explanations of cheese making in her little production kitchen.

Following that you will have a tasting of organically produced cassis and other blackcurrant related products, visiting the blackcurrant fields and learning the history and development of the cassis liqueur before heading back to Beaune in the late afternoon. During my last trip to Paris for work, I went with some French colleagues to a local restaurant in the heart of the 7th arrondissement call Le P’tit Troquet. This charming French bistro owned and operated by the chef and his family won’t dissappoint. The restaurant boasts a fine selection of delicious starters like a grilled sausage and potato entree, followed with well prepared hearty meat dishes and finishes with scrumptious dessert options all available on a well priced “menu fixe”. Some may find the place a bit cramped, but if you’ve been to Paris before and find a busy local hangout, it must be good.

It's impossible not to be enthusiastic about the more than generous portions offered with the €24.90 prix fixe menu. Mains might include tasty portions of wild duck in blackcurrant sauce, partridge with cabbage or wild venison stew. If you can still do dessert, go for one of the home-made tarts laden with seasonal fruits. The wine list has a reputation as one of the best-value selections in town. Book in advance, but expect to wait anyway.

Normandy Beaches

Recently, I seem to be getting a lot of emails from PVA guests wanting to visit the historical beaches of Normandy this spring and summer. Many of you aren’t sure if you should do it in a day trip or make an overnight journey. My answer? Both are possible!

If you are really interested in visiting the famous D Day sights, I'd suggest you stay in or around Bayeux or Deauville. This way you can see the sites without too much driving involved. Otherwise, if you're just looking for a brief escape to Normandy, I can highly recommend the charming town of Honfleur. Here you’ll find fantastic food and tranquille surroundings. But keep in mind it will be a 2 hour drive to most of the famous sites!

Many of you also ask about Mont St Michel. Personally I feel it is too far to drive and experience in just one day from Paris. Why not add this onto your Normandy excursion? Le Temps au Temps: Restaurant of the month

During my European travels, I'm always on the hunt for great food. French cuisine is by far my most favorite, with all their sauces, meats, cheese and of course, the wine. This month we're featuring a lovely little bistrot in the 11th arrondissement called Le Temps au Temps on one of the most famous gastronomic streets in Paris, rue Paul Bert.

Although tiny and a bit cramped, this Parisian style restaurant has something for every palate with "gourmet surprises galore" as one guest can't resist but saying. As usual, the Plat du Jour at this restaurant is delicious, and for only 30 euros you can have two plates and a dessert. Their wine selection of over 80 bottles from different regions in France certainly keep my attention for the duration of the meal! The owners are courteous and true to French style, prefer you take the dish as presented with no substitutes. The flavors are perfect this way anyway!

Carnaval de Paris

Many of you may have heard of the famous Carnival in Venice, a whirlwind of masks, gowns and gondolas. Well this year, Paris will give Italy a run for their money with the annual Carnaval de Paris, located in the 20th arrondissement on rue le Vau.

The annual Paris Carnaval procession goes by many names - including the Promenade du Boeuf Gras (Fat Cow Parade). Led by the Fat Cow herself, it revives an age-old tradition begun in 1274.

Parisians come out in force to participate in this cheerful procession, also known as the Pantruche Carnaval and the Saint-Fargeau, which makes its way through the capital's streets, accompanied by trumpeters and other musicians, until it reaches the town hall.

LES BEFORE YOUTH NIGHT
Every first Saturday of the month, Paris' Musée du Quai Branly opens its doors for free for its Les Before Youth Nights. The three-hour themed evenings take the form of hip hop open mic sessions, photographic workshops or dance-offs.

Check out the website to find out what's on during your stay - the programme for the first half of 2009 includes Shaolin Before (Saturday 7 February, Chinese martial arts), Before Jazz (Saturday 4 April, workshops and performances) and Before Cuisine d'Eté (Saturday 4 July, summer cooking).

SIX NATIONS FRANCE VS SCOTLAND
France play Scotland at the Stade de France in this Six Nations rugby union international.

The annual Six Nations championship is the oldest rugby tournament in the world, having existed in one form or another for 120 years. Initially the International Championship, featuring England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the competition has expanded twice, with France joining the fray in 1910 and Italy being the most recent addition, in 2000.

Last year, I had a PVA client hand me a card from La Poule au Pot, telling me it was the best French food they have ever had. A bold statement in a city of culinary wonder, but the reviews and recommendations don’t lie.

Established in 1935, this traditional bistro offers a charming ambiance and delicious food to go with it. There are dozens of other bars and cafes near this one, but none maintains a bookstore in back, and few seem so self-consciously aware of their roles as ersatz literary salons. Come for a glass of wine and participation in a discussion within what's defined as "a literary bar." It's named after a pulpy 19th-century romance (La Belle Hortense) set within the neighborhood. Many people have heard of the fabulous Adrian Leeds, food critique for Paris with a palate to kill. In looking for a restaurant to showcase this month, I followed her lead (no pun intended) and borrowed on of her personal favorites.

Chez la Vielle Adrienne, known by many for its fantastic traditional French cuisine, is a tiny little bistro that will never disappoint. A family establishment, which offers delicious and hearty main course dishes and fantastic desserts, has been in business for nearly 40 years.

Great November Events in Paris

It has been a month since my last posting and I'm sorry we missed October in Paris! Not to worry though, with the winter months coming in cool and the days becoming darker sooner, there is still plenty to see and do in Paris. Here you'll find a few great exhibitions that are on now, so don't miss out!

Picasso and the Masters 
The Grand Palais is currently running an ambitious exhibit that explores the work and influences of Spanish cubist painter Pablo Picasso. Whether you're an expert on Picasso's work or are encountering it for the first time, the show promises to give a solid overview of the artist's development and early influences, from Goya to Renoir and Manet. The exhibit showcases some 200 works and should allow even those who are very well-versed in Picasso's creations to gain new perspective. Through February 2009.

Jeff Koons at the Chateau de Versailles 
American artist Jeff Koons has "invaded" the Chateau de Versailles with his decidedly modern, pop-art inspired sculptures. Some are annoyed by the juxtaposition, others delighted. Through January 4th, 2009.

From Miro to Warhol. The Berardo collection in Paris
A new major exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg from October 2008 to February 2009
The Berardo collection, one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary art in Europe, will be showing in Paris for four months. More than seventy items from this collection of 862 works will be on show at the Musée du Luxembourg and will be presented around four themes: surrealism (Miró, Dali, Ernst, Breton…), abstraction from 1910 to the immediate post-war (Mondrian, Tanguy, Arp…), the confrontation Europe-US of the 1960s with new realism and Pop Art (Warhol, Klein, Soulages, Mitchell…) and creation post-1970 (Schnabel, Stella…).   Don’t miss this exhibition with works from the Lisbon museum of modern art, which like the collection bears the name of the wealthy Portuguese entrepreneur José Berardo.

Ah, the summer is coming to a close, people are rolling up their beach towels and packing their Smart cars and heading back into the city. But the fun doesn't have to stop just because la "Rentrée" is back. Below you'll find a list of events this Sept 2008 in Paris.

Geste d’Arte
The Viaduc des Artes hosts jewelers, glass blowers, sculptors and other craftsmen in this annual exposition of the arts, beginning in September and extending throughout the Fall on a variety of dates. Call (33) 44 75 80 66 for more information.

Festival Ile-de-France
A number of cultural and ethnic venues of significance to French history and culture present a variety of live music and other programs as the end of summer is celebrated throughout the month of September, and into October. Call (33) 58 71 01 01 for more information.

Autumn Festival
A number of venues all over Paris host a four-month-long arts festival which includes dramatic performances, movies, live concerts, such as the month-long outdoor jazz festival in the Parc de la Villette, dance and opera, and is the largest festival of its kind in the world. Cocktail Dance
Horn & Partners Expat Services invites the Paris international community to a Cocktail Dance, staged at the Russian Cultural Centre. Pret a Porter

Numicarta

Fete de l’Humanite

Heritage Days
The French government holds open-house towards the end of September during the annual Journees des Patrimoine, where visitors and residents can tour the homes of politicians and their office buildings. Call (33) 40 15 37 37 for more information.

Garde Republicaine
The brass bands and horses in full ceremonial dress are paraded by the French Presidential Guard at the Casernes des Celestins on the last weekend in September. Call (33) 49 96 13 33 for more information.

Paris-Versailles Walk

Antiques Biennal

Art Paris
Every year, and concurrent with the Antiques Biennal every other year, the Carrousel de Louvre also hosts an exhibition of paintings, sculptures, videos and photographs by promising new artists from all over Europe, during the last two weeks in

Paris Wine & Cheese: An Intimate Experience

Every so often Ciao Bella likes to showcase a new tour or activity that is really special, something that you couldn't find on your own or something that gives you a better look into life here in France.

We have looked high and low for a unique wine tasting event in the city. We wanted something more intimate for our guests than the standard tasting orientation, but rather an in-depth look at the wine, the cheese, and more importantly, how the French incorporate these into their everyday life.

We are thrilled to be working with a wine expert and food journalist who has lived in France for almost 30 years. Having explored both the country and specifically wine and cheese, she offers these tastings so that she can share her knowledge and passion with others.

Our guests are welcome in her Paris garden apartment near the lovely Père Lachaise in groups of no more than ten people. This intimate setting allows for lots of questions and certainly, lots of tasting! This promises to be a very unique and memorable event while in Paris.

What You'll Taste: Our host will serve a representative and savory array of ten well-known and lesser-known French cheeses with fresh baguettes and other breads. You’ll taste the cheeses with the four wines that best accompany them. Since cheese is seasonal, what you'll sample will depend on whether the tasting is held in summer, fall, winter or spring! But whatever the season, you'll discover an enormous variety of new and different taste combinations.

What you'll learn about cheese and wine: You'll learn how to shop for cheese, how to keep cheese, what an AOC cheese is, and even how to slice Roquefort and Brie ! This unique wine and cheese tasting session is a veritable “Tour de France of Cheese” and a rare opportunity to learn more about French « fromage » and the wines that accompany them.

Price and reservations: The price of the wine and cheese discovery is 85 euros per person for the course plus the wine and cheese expenses. Depending on the group and the number of people, as well as the number of wines and cheeses you wish to taste, the wine and cheese expenses can vary from a low of 15 euros per person on up. Once you’ve expressed your interest in the event and have given me the number of people in your group, our wine and cheese expert will make a proposal and we will send you an estimate for these expenses as we arrange the event.

Restaurant of the Month: Aux Charpentiers

The Magnificent Chartres Cathedral

Many tourists find themselves going to the likes of Versailles, Notre Dame and Fontainbleu to get their fix of impressive monuments in and around Paris. Often overlooked as “out of the way”, the stunning Chartres Cathedral is by far my favorite church in all of Europe. Located in the town of Chartres, just 80 kilometers from Paris and just over an hour by train, is considered one of the finest examples in all France of the Gothic style of architecture.

The façade itself is typical of many Gothic buildings, and although impressive, certainly doesn’t lend itself to the wonders that lay inside the cathedral itself. What is most unbelievable to me is the interior, with hunreds of 16th century scultptures depciting the story of Christ and the stained glass windows. Everywhere vivid colour splashes on to the floor from the superb stained glass windows that glow like jewels. Dating from the early 13th century, the glass largely escaped harm during the religious wars of the 16th century; it is said to constitute one of the most complete collections of medieval stained glass in the world. Of the original 186 stained-glass windows, 152 have survived.

One of the great chronichlers of the human condition, American photographer Annie Leibowitz rose to fame for her portraits of Hollywood stars, politicians, artists, and "ordinary" people whose individual, fragile beauty has consistently shone through in her work. The European House of Photography looks back at the artist's life and artistic ambitions across more than 200 works.

Napoleon: Symbols of Power under the Empire

Spanish Summer...in Paris

With sweltering summer heat and odd rainstorms, forget Paris and head for Spain. Well, sort of. The Petit Palais is hosting an exhibition focusing on Flamenco, avant-garde and popular culture, from 1865 to1939. Composed essentially of the Spanish cultural identity, Flamenco, a dance both sensual and mysterious, captivated the excitement of several generations of painters and sculptors and inspired them in their quest for modernity. The years 1850 to 1939 demonstrate this notably in the works of Courbet, Manet, Degas, Sorolla, Picasso, Delaunay, Gargallo, Lipchitz…

Beat the Heat: Paris Plage

Just like last summer, Paris hosts their annual "Paris Plage", a truly unique experience for those coming to Paris on vacation.

Two thousand tons of sand and some palm trees is all that is needed to annually transform the right bank of the Seine into a manmade beach worthy of the French capital. The Paris Plage (Paris Beach) is a highly popular, free 'event' instituted by the City Fathers in 2002 that attracts millions of visitors to its shores. Between July and August, land-locked city dwellers can enjoy sun, fun and themed activities, without the usual Parisian price tag. A recent addition is a large swimming pool - good news for those seeking some relief from the summer sun, especially as the dirty water of the Seine itself is not a welcome thought.

My personal preference is to hit up the beach on Canal St Martin. You'll find less tourists there and a much livelier atmosphere with music, dancing and great bars to enjoy while watching the "lapping waves" on the Paris Plage. Be sure to bring a swimsuit!

It's that time of year again! For those in Paris for the festivities, Bastille Day is not to be missed!

France's most important national holiday, Bastille Day commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution with ceremonies, dancing, parties and balls all over the city. In the morning there is a grand military parade along the Champs Elysees, accompanied overhead by jet formations, and after the day-long festivities, a fireworks display takes place near the Eiffel Tower.

June's Restaurant of the Month

For many of you coming to Paris, finding a good place to eat can actually be quite daunting. Seems like everywhere you turn there are tourist menus boasting "authentic" French cuisine written only in English. Rule of thumb...if the menu is in French with no English translation, give it a try! Also, if you see locals there (especially for lunch) have a seat and try the Plat du Jour, usually the best dish of the day.

Each month we're happy to introduce a local favorite that the PVA staff enjoys to dine at. Get the real scoop on Parisian food here!

This month, we're featuring one of my personal favorites located on Canal St Martin in the 10eme. La Marine is one of those perfect French restaurants, small but spacious, plush without being overdone and the lighting is just right. Although this district of Paris has become quite trendy in the last few years, you can still find incredible food along the quai and La Marine is certainly no exception.

I recently dined there with a colleague and we were both impressed with the wide selection of both starters and main dishes. Traditional yes, boring no. A simple twist on the standard Cote d'Agneau with Dauphinois potatoes paired with a St Emillion wine, one could say it was a simple meal. But the flavors the chef has created with his sauces, combined with the mood and atmosphere makes for one of the best meals I've experienced in a long time. My traveling companion thoroughly enjoyed her grilled fish and raspberry sorbet with cinnamon biscotti for dessert.

With views on the canal, this is bound to be a popular place. Be sure to call ahead for dinner reservations. Once you're there, you won't be disappointed...Bon Appetit!

MIDSUMMER FIREWORKS

CHOPIN FESTIVAL

Festival of Music in Paris

One of the most popular, and certainly my favorite event in Paris, has to be the Festival of Music. Unlike any other music festival anywhere in the world, you can't help but find something you like. From Jazz to hard Rock, there is a live band for everyone.

On the evening of June 21st, clear your calendar for a fun evening out. Starting from around 4pm in the afternoon, you'll find live musicians on every street corner, yes, literally, EVERY street corner. And not just that, but in every single arrondissement! The first year I attended I actually had no idea what was going on, I literally stumbled into it. We were having drinks in the Latin Quarter and found ourselves near metro Odéon where we saw (or heard) the first band. Curious, we found our way up to the Pantheon and back behind on rue Mouffetard. This was a young crowd, with fun music and crazy students. The streets were packed around 2:00 am when we tried to find our way home by taxi (good luck!).

The next year was a bit calmer, enjoyed the music out on the various street-side cafés in Montmartre. We finished the evening off up near the Sacre Coeur, listening to soft jazz and enjoying the view. The following year we enjoyed the music in the Marais, with wild African beats and quirky people dancing in the street.

This is a night not to miss and certainly a memorable experience for any seasoned traveler or lucky local. Enjoy!

ANNUAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

VINTAGE CAR RALLY
During the month of May, vintage car owners compete in a race up the Montmartre hill, the steepest and tallest, with local café and bars providing a variety of food and other events. Call (33) 46 06 79 56 for more information.

FOIRE DU TRONE
For the entire month of May, the Pelouse de Reuilly hosts this famous traditional fair which dates back to the 1100s, where traditional pig-shaped bread is sold, and there is an abundance of rides, live entertainment, freak shows circus performers. Call (33) 46 27 52 29 for more information.

DIRECTORS' FORTNIGHT
La Quinzaine des Realisateurs features films shown at the preceding Cannes Film Festival, screened for Parisians at the Forum des Images. Held the last part of May through the beginning of June. Call (33) 44 76 62 00 for more information.

BAZART
If you are shopping for reasonably priced, high-quality original art, your best bet is to attend this traveling art show held from late May to late August at La Samaritaine in the 1st arrondissement, which features a rooftop café from which you can also get a panoramic view of the city. French Open Championship Tennis 2008

Even if you know everything about the event, the players, the competition, the history of the game, the stadium and the passion….you can’t help strongly wishing to watch the first balls of the games at the Porte d’Auteuil. Let the tennis fans rejoice : Roland Garros is coming up soon !...

The world championship in clay courts, the « French », as they call it in the rest of the world, is the best place for the tennis stars and clay court specialists to meet. One of the member of the four grand slam major opens, Roland Garros has witnessed great confrontations, astonishing power reversals and unquestionned victories since 1891. It is the place were tennis player such as Borg, Graf, Wilander, Lendl, Kuerten or Nadal started their careers, the place of the most intense emotions, the most spectacular games : Noah/Wilander in 1983, Lendl/McEnroe in 1984, Graf/Sanchez in 1996…We can still remember many images of these times. If, just like millions of fans of the yellow ball, you dream about sitting in front of the central court, book now, the seats will quickly be sold out.

Free Museum Night! Saturday May 17th in France

As part of the worldwide Museum Night event, Paris' main museums will open their doors for free after sundown and through 1 a.m. Several noteworthy exhibits are complemented by special lighting effects. Conferences, concerts, and film screenings are also in store.

There have been rumors of 2 different dates, but on the website it says Saturday May 17th.
